Blue and red, after 2,300 years
Under Manduria’s Messapian walls, archaeologists have studied 24 tombs from the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. In one, an inscription gives a woman the title “thabara”, read as a priestess, and painted blue and red meanders still line the walls. The readings are preliminary; the slabs may one day be shown in the town’s archaeological museum. The walls are a short walk from Via Verdi.
